Sea to Sky

This book is number three in a series about an ex RCMP turned trucker turned amateur detective. I haven't read the previous two books but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of this, as everything I needed to know for the story was explained, without it clogging up the storyline.
The scene is set with our hero, Hunter Rayne, having a public spat with the soon to be murdered man and Hunter's subsequent investigation into the circumstances and reasons for the death. As you would expect, this involved plenty of subtle clues and red herrings before we discovered who the killer was.
I enjoyed this book as it worked well as a standalone story, with well-formed characters and locations. I liked the storyline which involved the biker Dan Sorenson (known as Sorry) and this had a nice conclusion with him discovering things about himself. If I was to cite a negative about the book I suppose it was Hunter's `boss' El. She needed to be in the story in order to link Hunter and Sorry and also to facilitate some of the plot, but for me, she was made to be a bigger character than she needed to be.
Overall though, a minor niggle and I would recommend this book to those that like a murder mystery. 4/5.

Overall I found this an interesting mystery. I will say that I almost set it aside a few pages into the book. I found the first few pages to be unsmoothed, choppy in the dialog. It did help set the tone for the character Mike Irvine but I felt it distracting. As the book changed to the other characters the story was a smooth read.
I did find a good depth in the development of the characters and the descriptions of the area was well done. The book kept my interest and will likely buy the next book.
On the technical side, the chapter breaks were not always clean. I did receive a free copy to review

I guess maybe that this book just was not my cup of tea. The couple of `romantic' interests for the main character seemed forced and certainly uneventful; I am really not sure why they were `romantic' interests. The main character obviously has some emotional constipation issues. Maybe I need to read the other Hunter Rayne books to truly understand him.
The story seemed slow to me, which surprised me because there is a murder, missing kid, and a couple (?) of romantic interest. It should move quickly enough. There was also a lot of clutter with Hunter's best friend's history and another trucker's relationship with his dad that did not really seem needed.
The ending was good. I certainly did not suspect who the killer was, but I am not sure that it is very probable. I have a hard time believing it due to the buildup and history of the character involved.
I am sure that I am just missing something because the other reviews are glowing, but it just was not for me. I am giving the story the benefit of the doubt with the three stars, because it seems to be only me that was not enthralled by this book.
