Building Big Iron: The Epic History of Locomotive Building in the United States from 1830 to the Present, by Bill Yenne

Building Big Iron is the story of an industry that arrived in the United States at almost the very moment the Industrial Revolution began to touch American shores, and which remains a powerful part of the ongoing America’s industrial infrastructure.

This is the story of myriad companies and factories that built steam locomotives, and a smaller number of companies that built electrics and diesel-electrics. It is the story of small companies that came and went, and of small companies that became large companies. It is the story of large companies that evolved into the Big Three of Steam—Alco, Baldwin, and Lima. It is the story of the Big Two of Diesel—GE Transportation and Electro-Motive—that have held that mantle for half a century while undergoing internal changes and challenges.

This is the story of hardworking men with calluses on their gnarled hands and grease under their nails. It is also the story of men who sat in head offices and peered out across vast manufacturing operations.

The building of America’s railroads has been the subject of countless books and even a few movies. However, one cannot approach this literature without considering the locomotives that made it all possible, however. In 1884, Scientific American mentioned the great American railroad network, and reminded readers that, “side by side with this enterprise in railroad building, at once caused by and promoting it, has been the wonderful growth of every industry pertaining to the equipment and operation of railroads. There were a few locomotives imported in the infancy of railroad building here, which met with only indifferent success, but our own inventors and mechanics early began to take the lead in this branch of manufacture and in car building, which they have ever since held.”

The uncredited technology writer who penned this eloquent passage went on to say, “the locomotive of today is one of the most wonderful of all the products of man’s skill, and has reached a point of perfection from which it seems hardly possible to attain further progress, so long as we obtain power from coal and wood according to principles now understood.”

If he could have peered into the future a few decades, he would have seen that great innovations in steam locomotives were just beyond the horizon, and great innovations in diesel-electric technology were a bit farther beyond. In short, he would see the wonderful evolution of one of America’s greatest industries, which I have tried to assemble in this volume.

Off The Rails
By Andy in Washington
This is my least favorite kind of history book. Lots of facts, mostly for the sake of having lots of facts, and the kind of stuff you forget even as you are reading it.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* The book was fairly short, and not very expensive

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* Much of the narrative was made up of lengthy quotations from other books or sources. The phrase "As Emory Johnson reminds us in his book American Railway Transportation" must have appeared 25 times, each time followed by a long bit of prose that didn't really say much. In short, it took an entire paragraph or three to convey what should have been a single sentence.

* There is not narrative, just facts. I read the production figures for the Baldwin Locomotive company for numerous years, and learned that they were not very successful in making the switch from steam to diesel and diesel electric. Why? And why was diesel so much better?

* Likewise, terms are included in the narrative that are never explained. "Equalizing levers" were evidently an important improvement to early locomotives, but there is not the slightest explanation of what they might be. Luckily there is google.

* There are many more examples of where facts are stated with no explanation or context. I'll just add one more example. Near the end of the book there is a section that describes the various production rates and horsepower of more modern (1990-2005) locomotives. But there is absolutely no way to use that information to learn anything. How powerful does a locomotive have to be? Does the route matter? I would assume that locomotives that are going to serve their life in the Western part of the US have different service requirements than those on the east coast, or maybe not. Why would a railroad ever have more than one type of locomotive-seems it would make maintenance more difficult. None of this is even remotely examined.

* At best, there are a few pages that actually describe how locomotives are designed and built. Again, only in the most general of terms, and with large gaps in the narrative.

=== Summary ===

The whole book reads as if the author collected a number of annual reports from present and former locomotive companies, a few texts, and connected them together. There are loads of facts and figures about what company built how many of what and where they built them, but no analysis on the types of engines, what they were used for, how the technology of railroads affected anything else, cost/benefits of larger engines...nothing.

I'd say skip this book unless you are really interested in how many locomotives the Hinkley and Drury Works produced in 1842 (10, if you must know). You can learn a lot more from free websites.

Dry History
By Charles Isele
This book is filled with interesting facts and goes into great detail about the development of railroad motive power from the early stages until today. Great number of detgails about the owners of companies building engines and the rise and fall of the industry. If a person is interested in a specific company or period of time, this would be a good reference book.

Background for all RR nuts!
By Keno
Excellent details on the evolution of the steam engine through the modern day diesel. Steam gets most of the thunder (pun intended) as it's history was much more complex. When diesels became the way to go, the field quickly narrowed down to 2, EMD & GE so the story doesn't need to be very long. Any one who is a rail fan or modeler should read this one!
