Strong collection of stories
By S. Shamma
I have been waiting a long time to read this book. In fact, it must have been on my list of to-reads for many years now, until I finally succumbed and ordered it online, losing all hope of ever finding it at a bookstore.
There's always the risk of losing interest half way through, when reading a short stories book. I usually try to avoid them, unless I know and have read previous works by the author. With this one though, the description intrigued me, the writer intrigued me, the title intrigued me, and I'm not going to lie, the cover intrigued me. I wasn't wrong with my instinct - it was a good book.
It wasn't great, but it was very good. As in all anthologies, there are stories that I preferred more than others, stories I enjoyed more than others, however throughout every story, the writing was consistent. It was strong, it was gripping, it was clever and witty, and oh-so-entertaining. Daniel Orozco has a gift for writing, and his style of writing is so beautiful, that I sat there wondering how he even comes up with this stuff. I enjoyed many of the twists and turns that some of the stories took, with some ending shockingly, and others ending thoughtfully, almost mid-sentence...leaving you wondering what just happened.
I think my personal favorite story was The Bridge where a man joined the crew that repaints bridges - specifically the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, and he has to deal and cope with witnessing jumpers leap to their death. I loved how every guy on that crew shared his personal experience.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the first story and title of the book - Orientation. It was very entertaining, and comically satisfying to read.
On the other hand, I wasn't too fond of I Run Every Day or Only Connect. I will say this, Orozco is a brilliant writer, and an expert at spinning beautifully crafted sentences, but he does have a knack for violence that sometimes made me blink a few times in disbelief.

"You hang on and you think: The shaking will either stop or keep going."
By Michael J. Ettner
"This book has been a long time coming," Daniel Orozco observes in the Acknowledgments page at the end of "Orientation and Other Stories," his terrific collection of nine short stories. The book assembles all of the pieces Orozco has published thus far in literary magazines (both print and online), starting with the title story which he conceived nearly 20 years ago.
Recently, Orozco was interviewed by the local newspaper in the town of Moscow, Idaho, where he teaches fiction writing at the University of Idaho. Describing his painstakingly slow path in composition, he revealed he might spend a week writing a paragraph and a month writing a page. He said this was "a way that makes me feel comfortable about moving on."
It's no surprise, then, to find every one of the nine stories in "Orientation and Other Stories" to be of consistently high quality. This consistency does not come from Orozco chaining himself to one comfortable formula or style. No, he manages to pull something different and original out of the hat at each performance.
Thematic links do appear among the stories. Although Orozco can be satirical (especially in several of the stories that take place in office settings) and flat out hilarious (as in the farcical mutual seduction of two cops in "Officers Weep"), his overriding interest is in deadly serious matters: what it means to be alive ("this feeling that you're part of a world with other people in it, and that you matter because somebody else seems to think you do'); why human connections are so difficult ("you get where you are by yourself"); how living our modern, pretend lives (building imaginary connections) dooms us. Some of these stories will make you shiver in self-recognition.
If you've previously read something by this author, you probably don't need any persuading. But if not, and you want to get a taste of Orozco's writing, the "Click to Look Inside!" book feature here on Amazon will give you access to the first eight pages of "Orientation." A complete version of the story is available elsewhere online (search the three words, Orozco Orientation nomrad; or go to Google Books and search for Orozco Orientation). Want more? The fourth story in the collection, "I Run Every Day," can be read for free at All-Story, the online literary magazine supported by the filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola (search the two words, Orozco Zoetrope). That story of a lost man will introduce you to a signature skill Orozco has mastered as a writer, even in the small compass of these short stories: how to slow down or speed up the reader's sense of time, in the service of the narrative. This is especially felt in "Somoza's Dream" (a fictional look at the life in exile of the Nicaraguan dictator, in which the author "stops time" at the moment of his gruesome assassination) and also in "Only Connect" (in which a woman harbors an act of moral cowardice for decades).
The pieces in "Orientation and Other Stories" are Orozco's initial attempts at a psychological and moral accounting of the kind of lives we live today, and I for one look forward to reading his next, longer-form report.
Notes:
1. If you're thinking of buying the hardcover version of the book, please know that it's crudely made -- it's just a tight, glue-bound paperback encased in stiff cardboard covers. So seriously consider the less expensive paperback instead, or, if you own and use an e-reader, the Kindle version. There's something about these stories -- their intensity and brevity (about 20 pages each) -- that makes the collection well suited to the e-reader format.
2. There's news that Orozco is under contract with Farrar, Straus & Giroux, to complete a novel he started back in 2005 while living in a small town in West Texas. No word yet on the subject or release date. In an interview on WNYC Radio in April, Orozco laughed and said it would appear "in a couple of years" (you can listen to the 15-minute audio online at wnyc [dot] org. Just type in the author's name in the search box at the top of WNYC's home page).

Excellent short story collection
By Jonathan Robbins
I am not generally a fan of short stories - I prefer the enhanced character and story development that long prose fiction provides - but this collection was excellent. Orozco is a gifted writer who has the ability to quickly get you involved in the lives of the characters in his books. Some of these stories were just superb, and I only regret that he didn't take the time to turn them into full blown novels in their own right. And that's what I always find a bit frustrating about this format (and especially this collection since the stories are so well done): I want more! The last story in the group, "The Shakers," was amazing, and could easily have been a novel. So much of that story left me wondering what would happen next to the people. "Only connect" was haunting - the randomness of the story will haunt you. "Somoza's Dream" - great.
These stories are all gems, and very digestible. If you love, or even like, short stories, this is a great place to start.
