Disconcertingly accurate portrayal of an abusive relationship
By Christopher E Terry
The book starts off a bit slowly, but give it a few chapters and it hooks you. I'm not a very 'critical' reader, but even I caught some interesting allusions to Frankenstein. (I'd be super embarrassed if that wasn't the intent and I only think that because of the title)
Even so, it's a tough read to get through if you've been in a situation like this before. It's primarily a story about a dysfunctional, abusive relationship and the damage it does to the people surrounding it, told from the perspective of the abused. The confusion, guilt, anger, and frustration mixed in with love and friendships and flawed coping mechanisms; the lack of support from people who see it but don't know how to help, how that's so painfully different from the people who refuse to see the problem... I don't know, it's hard to describe, even having been there before. I had to put the book down every couple of chapters and go for a walk to work myself back into the shape to read the next chapter.
An emotionally difficult read, but so worth it.

Absolutely Terrible
By Alan Arthur Katz
I just can't remember a book I've ever disliked more than this one.
This is the anti-gay novel. Two characters, one a singer, the other a manager who turns him into a rock star.
The manager is a sniveling, cowardly, ridiculous closet case who bottoms with his lover, the rock star, but will not admit, even to himself, that he's gay. He's psychotic.
The singer turns into a spoiled, self-indulgent rock star who claims he loves the manager, but whenever things go wrong, he throws a monkey wrench into things to get his way - including getting a 16-year-old Bieber clone kicked off his contract and his manager fired, or sending secret sex tapes taken with hidden cameras as payback.
In other words, both MCs are reprehensible human beings. The closeted one tortures his best female friend by trying to use her to prove he's not gay, the rock star keeps proclaiming his love while making ridiculous demands and throwing hissy-fits.
This book is depressing - they make love, the manager goes guilty and throws him out - not just once, but innumerable times, just filling up page after page with unendurable and endless cowardice, self-hatred and whining.
If this is what gay life were actually like, I'd turn in my membership card.
And if you're looking for a happily-ever-after, boy are you looking at the wrong book. The ending of this book makes Brokeback Mountain look like a romantic comedy.
Please do not read this book if you don't have Xanax close at hand. And if you are prone to depression, stay as far away from this book as you possibly can - it may be dangerous to your health.
If I could, I would have given "Monster" no stars at all.
