A short book long on errors
By Jeff George
UPDATED REVIEW, April 2015:
In going back over my past reviews, I happened to notice that this book is no longer free. The author/publisher has raised the price to $2.99, but has not added to the value in any way. This development compels me to revisit the book, and reconsider its merits at its new price point.

The book appears unchanged from the version I reviewed in 2013. It still consists of fourteen 1-to-4-paragraph "chapters" that do little more than identify topics, generally without providing any specific, applicable, practical advice. There are still no photos, illustrations, charts, graphs or tables - not even a single photo on the cover. The cover text suggests it is a "step-by-step guide for keeping a successful aquarium," but it offers no steps and very little guidance. The author is enthusiastic about his topic, but his understanding of basic aquarium maintenance is shallow and in many instances dangerously incorrect.

For example, the author's confusion between highly-toxic nitrites and easily-managed nitrates, which I identified in my original review, has not been corrected. This dangerous error appears in both Chapter 6, "The Nitrogen Cycle," and Chapter 9, "Water Changes." The persistence of this error alone, after it was pointed out almost two years ago, should be reason enough not to purchase the book, because it calls into question the scant remaining information the book provides. The author could have fact-checked my critique in any basic aquarium book or website (the nitrogen cycle has been a well-understood and always-covered topic in books aimed at novice fishkeepers for 30 years or more) and fixed this error with a few keystrokes in an updated edition, but he has chosen to let it stand. (The Kindle format makes updating books painless and free for both authors and readers - one of its big advantages over physical books.)

The one-paragraph "chapter" on filtration doesn't describe a single actual filtration method or device. Several general filter designs, and hundreds of models, are available to the beginning aquarist, but the author doesn't even recommend his personal favorite, let alone offer any discussion of the pros and cons of different filtration strategies for varying applications. Further, his description of a "white film" inside a filter after a month of operation is incorrect: the desirable aerobic bacteria which populate a mature, properly-functioning filter should NOT be visible to the naked eye, as a "white film" or any other form. Nitrifying bacteria are microscopic and populate the filter media in a single layer, making them invisible without a microscope. The establishment of a healthy population of nitrifying bacteria can only be verified indirectly, by testing for the presence of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates in the aquarium water. The presence of a visible film on the interior of an aquarium filter is an indication that many layers of the WRONG sort of bacteria have populated the filter medium, most likely because the filter is clogged with debris and water is no longer flowing through it. The author is right that many novice aquarists who are not familiar with the nitrogen cycle over-clean the biological media in their filters, but he makes no distinction between biological media -- which can be rinsed gently to maintain water flow, but should be sterilized only in the direst of circumstances -- and mechanical and chemical media, which must be cleaned (mechanical) or replaced (chemical) regularly to remain effective. All of this could be fully and clearly explained in less than a thousand words, but the "chapter" on filtration in this book consists of a single paragraph of 130 words. (For comparison, this paragraph reviewing the author's chapter on filtration is 288 words long, not counting this parenthetical comment, so you learned more about aquarium filtration from this review than you would have had you bought the book.)

Amazingly, "Beginner Aquarium" includes no detailed coverage of actual fish species commonly available to beginning aquarists. A few species are mentioned in passing in other chapters, but no guidance is offered to the novice fishkeeper in choosing fish suitable for his first aquarium. At a bare minimum, I would have expected some sort of "Top Ten Fish for the Beginner," but there is no such information in the book.

The last thing I want to do is discourage fledgling authors, so my original 2-star review of this book -- when it was offered for free -- was gentle. (I retained the original 2013 review below this update, for historical reference.) For all I know, this book was written by a precocious youngster making an impressive first effort at self-publishing; I published and distributed a photocopied, four-page aquarium newsletter myself when I was eleven years old. On the other hand, I also don't want to discourage beginning aquarists, and if this book is the only guide a beginner has to support his first efforts as a fishkeeper, he's going to get very discouraged, very fast. What little valid information is contained "Beginner Aquarium" can be learned in ten minutes from any of several excellent aquarium websites that top the Google search results, for free and without the misinformation that this author stirs into his thin guide. When the book was free, it was struck me as amateurish but enthusiastic, and essentially harmless; at $2.99, it's overpriced and riddled with errors that will endanger your fish and hinder your success as a fishkeeper.

ORIGINAL REVIEW, 2013: "Asks more questions than it answers..."
This short intro to aquarium keeping is long on enthusiasm, but short on information. It raises most of the questions a novice fish keeper will (or should) ask, but the answers it offers are brief and lacking in specific detail or practical advice. Especially troubling is the author's confusion regarding the nitrogen cycle -- he reverses the names of the very dangerous nitrites, which can and must be removed through biological filtration, and the much less threatening nitrates, which can only be reduced through water changes. Still, the author deserves credit for introducing several important topics confronted by novice fish keepers, and he does that for free. Read this book to find out what the questions are, then invest in a more professional (and likely NOT free) aquarium guide to find the answers.
