Doughla Southall Freeman's research and scholarship are impressive

Douglas Southall Freeman's biography is often criticized as being a work of adoration. Yes, it's obvious from this compilation of Freeman's multi-volume study of Lee's life that Freeman considers Lee the perfect Christian officer and a gentleman. But Freeman's research and scholarship are impressive. This biography is well worth reading.

I would have liked a deeper analysis of his relationship with Longstreet

The book was informative. And provided some insight into Lee's character.
I would have liked a deeper analysis of his relationship with Longstreet. And why he on occasion allowed Longstreet to ignore his orders.
While I enjoyed the book, I don't think it was written as well as it could have been.
