Contain all three "Boner" books which contain some of the earliest children's illustrations by Dr. Seuss, first published separately by Viking in 1931, this edition is the first of the three published together and predates all but his earliest works. For most of his career, Geisel was reluctant to have his characters marketed in contexts outside of his own books, and these wonderful illustrations depict such character-to-come as the cat in The Cat in the Hat, and famous feet that will carry the Grinch to steel off Christmas some four decades later. Many other such examples of his works, over 50 in all, all done while in his late 20's. Dust jacket; Yellow and black design with caricatures by illustrator, design carries to the spine in checkerboard fashion, black and white lettering, rear panel list other books by this publisher and carries the catalog number 59 along the lower edge. Front panel carries synopsis, rear panel is price clipped and carries an advertisement for Hoyle's Games. Condition: Book; Near fine example with no signs of sunning except for the top edge stain which has lost its luster. Bright and clean boards and pages without marks, booksellers small, neat plate on inside of rear board, points and all edges are clean and not rubbed. Dust jacket; Very good. Bright with little signs of sunning to the spine, all edges show slight chips most evident against this jacket's black background, gutter of front panel is rubbed and both the front and back boards shows signs of noticeable but not heavy soiling, still very presentable. Jacket is price clipped and now protected in Brodart.

Where it all started

This Omnibus Boners book is a compilation of 3 books of Boners published in 1931 by Alexander Abingdon. A "Boner" is an unconsciously humorous response to an exam or essay question. In other countries, like Australia and the UK, the word "Howler" is used instead.
The first book in the Boners series, called simply "Boners", was the 4th-bestselling book in America for the year 1931. The book was so successful that 3 more editions - More Boners, Still More Boners, and this Omnibus volume -- were published the same year.
The first 2 Boners books are also notable for being Dr Seuss's first books of illustrations.
If you are a connoisseur of Boners books or Howlers books, then you must have the Boners collection. Many modern compilers of howlers have mined these classic books for some oft-repeated specimens.
