First of a new series

A Certain Threat opens with Lieutenant James Merriman coaching to his parents' home in Cheshire. The brig he commanded had been wrecked in a storm after a fierce action to save a disabled Indiaman from Algerine corsairs off West Africa and Merriman is worried about his career. Can he expect an appointment from the admiralty when England is at peace with France (which, in 1792, is in the throes of revolution) and his nagging wound won't heal?

Fortunately he finds a powerful protector and a good doctor. Summoned to the Admiralty, he is given command of the three-masted sloop of war, Aphrodite, barque-rigged and heavily armed. He finds himself near home as he is sent to the Irish Sea to uncover a scheme by French agents provocateurs to foment rebellion in Ireland while stealing critical matériel.

This is a tightly plotted and nicely paced novel. Burnage surrounds Merriman with a set of well-developed characters: his family, his faithful lieutenant Andrews, his doughty coxswain and the beautiful Mary Simpson. There are others, and I hope to see more in subsequent books. Much of the story takes place ashore and, as a lover of historic naval fiction, I wish Burnage had given us more action afloat -- the ship handling and naval engagement passages are compelling and sweep the reader along. The author seems increasingly to come into his own as a writer as the book progresses. Although the early part of the book is marred by technical flaws (run-on sentences, comma errors, awkward phrasing and general stiffness), there are fewer and fewer of these problems later in the book. One final polish, perhaps with the help of a copy-editor, would have made a big difference here.

Roger Burnage prefaces The Merriman Chronicles Book One: A Certain Threat with the promise of a multi-novel saga following the Merriman family from the late eighteenth century to the First World War. Since A Certain Threat ends with England and France declaring war and James Merriman setting off on an all-new adventure, we can allow ourselves to hope that the next novel continues his story.

Pretty good beginning story

This is the first in a series, and as a lover of Historical Nautical fiction I am looking forward to more. Burnage has an easy writing style that gets you hooked and has a pace that does not flag. There is nothing new here, Merriman is traveling a well worn path with many cliche's of this type of period adventure. He comes from a naval family. He has a strong and competent companion from "before the mast". He is clever, brave, and good looking but does not realize how exceptional he is. The main thing to be explored in future books is that Burnage needs to flesh out other officers and give Merriman some people as followers as well as perhaps some patrons or mentors in the fleet.

The plot involved piracy as well as French machinations and probably introduced a villain which we will see again.

An interesting style.

This author has an interesting style of writing and having read most Naval Series on offer, I found it a little problematic to adjust. He moves along at a good pace and at times I would have enjoyed a moment or two to smell the roses. However, the storyline is good and I would recommend the series for it's authentic settings, characters and general 19th Century ambiance.

She Blushed, He Blushed, They Blushed, Everyone Blushed!

I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. It was okay I guess. New girl moves to town. Has super strict parents that are also sort of abusive. She meets seven boys who are all "around her age". (It seems like almost every teenager she meets is described that way.) The boys take an instant liking to her and they take her under their wing so to speak. The book only takes place over....about a week I think? I'm not really a fan of those types of books. Anyway, the boys all want to protect Sang (the new girl) from her crazy parents, which is something she's never experienced before because she's never had a friend before. But the boys have a secret they are keeping from Sang. It seems like we'll find out what that secret is in the second book.

As of now, there are 4 books in this series and this first one was free. I can honestly say that I'm interested enough about what the boys secret is, to possibly buy the second book, but I don't know if want to know badly enough to spend $3.99 to find out. We'll see.

My hesitation comes from, I guess the writing style? I'm not sure exactly. I can't put my finger on it, but something felt off during the entire time I was reading. Repetitive maybe? Or Juvenile writing skills? I don't know. What I do know is that I found myself skimming through some sections. When the book started to go into too much detail for things, I found myself skimming. Here's an example:

"I pulled my hair out of the mess on top of my head, untangling the clip. I held the clip with my teeth and twisted my hair again, replacing the clip in a quick movement. Drips fell on my neck as the tips of my hair spilled out from the top of the clip."

To me, that statement just seemed like too much information for such a simple and inconsequential action. I kinda felt like she was eventually gonna start describing a walk across the street as: I put my right foot in front of the left one, then my left foot in front of the right one. There was a stone on the ground, but my right foot stepped to the left of it, so I didn't get it stuck in the bottom of my shoe. Re-reading what I just wrote, I guess that seems kind of harsh, but I don't mean to be. I didn't stop reading, I just skipped over sections that didn't seem important or were kinda boring.

The biggest issue I had with this book goes along with this reviews headline.
Blushing, Blushed, Turned Bright Red, Tinged Red, Embarrassed.
No matter what the scene was, no matter what all the characters were doing, no matter if it really made sense for the character to do it, someone always seemed to be blushing in some form. 38 times a character blushed, sometimes doing it at the same time as another character too, so that number should really be higher. 20 times combined for a character tinging red or just plan old being embarrassed. I don't know about any of you, but I can blush when the occasion warrants it, but never say 10 times in one day. And I've come across one or two boys who I can make blush, but not seven of them and all at once. By the end of story, the blushing was simply driving me crazy.

All in all though, I would recommend people to read this book....while it's free so they can all make up their own minds. A lot of people reviewing this book liked it more than I did, so the faults I've could only just be me. In the meantime, I'm going to contemplate some more about if I want to spend $4 on the second book. I can tell you though, if I do decide to go for book two and it is pretty much exactly the same as this first one? I wont be going for book three, that's for sure.

Very Troubling Story Line for a Young Adult Series

This series starts out innocently enough when an abused and very troubled young girl (and her sister) meet a group of supposedly "heroic" young boys who try to help her. Aside from any shortcomings in the writing, if you follow the series from books one through five, the story line becomes quite troubling for what appears to be a series targeted at a young adult audience. Sang's interactions with the seven boys become more and more intimate (and unrealistic) as the story progresses and, I felt more and more uncomfortable with where the story line was going. In book five--**SPOILER ALERT**--the proposal is made that Sang should "marry" all seven of the boys, and the there is talk of "conditioning" her to the idea. Sang goes from being abused by her mother to being abused by a series of young men. What makes it worse is that this is done in the guise of "saving" her. I just can't see advocating polyandry as an appropriate young adult story line, and I can't recommend any of the books in this series.

Looking forward to the next book

I seriously can't figure out how I feel about this book - I certainly don't dislike it... but it was 280 pages devoted to exactly what the title says - introductions. I don't think that it was necessary to devote an entire novel to the introductions of the boys. After a while, I found myself becoming frustrated because I wanted to get to the meat of the story which unfortunately, never came. I think that I would have benefited from learning about the boys and experiencing their individual interactions with Sang in the midst of action... rather than reading a novel that felt like a long prologue.

Sang is a teen who lives in an abusive home and after becoming fed up with her parents' stifling household, she decides to run away. After living so tightly under her overbearing mother's thumb, Sang has almost zero exposure to kids her own age - and that shows. During her interactions with the boys, Sang comes off as overly fragile... so much so that I pictured her staring up at the boys with wide and admiring doe eyes. It was pretty hard for me to relate to her because of this. She was overly adoring of the boys, too apologetic and timid, and too quick to assume that she was burdensome to the guys. I don't have any problems with the boys' characters necessarily, but the sheer amount of them felt incredibly overwhelming.

Despite my hesitations about Introductions, Stone set up enough of a story that I am intrigued and I want to continue on with the series. I just want to know what the heck the Academy is!
