"We have attempted to give to this volume a certain unity, not to make a simple chronological enumeration of events, but to group the details around the more important facts – the formation of the feudal system in succession to the Germanic invasions, the development of the Catholic Church, the strife of Christian Europe against the Muslim Orient, the struggle between the Papacy and the Empire leading to the fall of the German power, the formation of strong monarchies in France and in England. We have in particular given a large place to the rôle and to the history of the Church which dominates all this period, and which has been ordinarily so neglected in our schoolbooks, and have sought to make clear how France obtained in the thirteenth century a sort of political and intellectual hegemony in Europe. We hope those who read will understand what were the great ideas and directive tendencies which determined the historical evolution of the Middle Ages. We have always kept in mind in writing the conclusion to which we were advancing." - Charles Bémont & Gabriel Monod

Through A Glass Darkly And Happily
By propertius
I know that others who have expressed their opinions have not given this book such a high rating but let us be fair. It does do what it set out to do and that is a summary of the trends and incidents of what is termed the medieval period. Even that may be a misnomer since some would argue quite convincingly that there are two period, the "dark ages" and the "medieval ages."
This book is a tool, albeit, a tool over 100 years old, to help the reader approach that period with some comprehension. If you think medieval, and think of Ivanhoe, this tome will correct that. One reviewer complained that it is western European centric in it approach and geographically speaking he would be correct. But to assuage the reader's pique, if you look at the time line for this, it may have to do with the fact that the medieval development began 200 to 300 years later in the east than the west. (see "Medieval Cities" by Henri Pirenne, 1925 Princeton University Press).
Enough said, for 99 cents, you also get an active TOC which is indispensable for a work such as this. If you disagree with a particular opinion, remember that a lot of scholarly water has gone under the bridge since this was first published. Remember that this was written to accompany lectures so it rather dry reading but an exciting period.

A Lot of Ground was Covered
By Patricia C. Stendal
As a person who is very interested in history but who has not studied this era much, I was hoping for something a little more interesting. I did finish it, but somehow the many, many rulers who crossed the screen with few exceptions, did not live for me. I did get a little better concept of the total era. A lot of ground was covered.

Dry but interesting
By derbyfour
The author is well informed. The book is a very interesting read although it is a bit dry. I found myself having to put it down and have a break before reading on. Even so, I would recommend it for those who want to find out more about Europe during medieval times.
