Combining vivid personal narrative with historical and operational analyses, this book takes a candid look at U.S. naval airpower in the Vietnam War. Coauthors John Nichols, a fighter pilot in the war, and Barrett Tillman, an award-winning aviation historian, make full use of their extensive knowledge of the subject to detail the ways in which airpower was employed in the years prior to the fall of Saigon. Confronting the conventional belief that airpower failed in Vietnam, they show that when applied correctly, airpower was effective, but because it was often misunderstood and misapplied, the end results were catastrophic. Their book offers a compelling view of what it was like to fly from Yankee Station between 1964 and 1973 and important lessons for future conflicts. At the same time, it adds important facts to the permanent war record.
Following an analysis of the state of carrier aviation in 1964 and a definition of the rules of engagement, it describes the tactics used in strike warfare, the airborne and surface threats, electronic countermeasures, and search and rescue. It also examines the influence of political decisions on the conduct of the war and the changing nature of the Communist opposition. Appendixes provide useful statistical data on carrier deployments, combat sorties, and aircraft losses.

Insightful
By C
Hadn't read a whole lot about the Vietnam war, especially from the air power perspective. As a career naval aviator, I cherish the author's thoughts and observations.

In life when you have the means but lack the will to win(epitomized by your own government's actions) , you have a recipe for disaster, that's the message the author convey s in this excellent account of air war in Vietnam seen from the Carriers in the golf of Tonkin.

Real Vietnam War History
By The Chad
I'm a F-8 enthusiast and I grew up after the Vietnam War, but I learned more about it from this book than I ever learned from anything in college or on film. This book was such a great read that I couldn't put it down, and when I went to work, I couldn't wait to get home so I could continue reading it. I finished it quickly and I have to say there were several stories in it that were described and pictured very vividly in my mind that stuck with me long after finishing this book.
Also, learning about the tactics and rules of engagement used by the US Navy in the Vietnam War and how the F-8's were specifically used and employed is priceless. The F-8 Crusader's history in this war is not as well known or as well covered in the media as the F-4 Phantom, and I'm so glad that CDR Nichols took the time to write this book before he passed away so it would never be lost. Thank you sir!
By the way, this book is in desperate need of a new edition. I first bought the paperback version which has the blue cover and it is a digitized copy of the 1987 first edition from the collections of the University of Michigan Library. This digitized copy is newly printed on demand when you order it, so what you get is a book that is new, but looks very old because of the source copy. The 20 black and white photos in the center of the book are also a little dark and fuzzy because of this digitization.
I later purchased an out of print hardcover edition of this book and it was much better than the digitized blue paperback. The printing on the page looked better, the photos in the center were brighter and sharper, and because I bought it used it cost a lot less!
This book is definitely worth owning and reading and I highly recommend picking up an out of print hardcover, especially if you can find one in good shape and at a decent price. Although a new edition of this book from the current holders of its publishing rights would be much appreciated.
