Learning the magic word

I review a lot of children's books, and most of them are fun stories that expand their vocabulary a bit, teach the ABCs or how to count, or picture books. There's definitely a need for aids in teaching kids basic manners at an early age, and author Kurt Zimmerman's little book "The Trouble with Trolls" helps to fill that niche. Go with young William as he tries to solve the troll's riddle in order to cross the bridge. The troll doesn't care if William's father is king of the realm, he insists that William play by his rules. By the way, the troll in the story is uglier and nastier than the rather cute-looking troll on the cover, but he's not too scary for younger children.

Note: There are several color images in the story, but they're not as critical to the story as in some children's books. They look better on a device with a color screen, like my Kindle Fire HD 7", but they were acceptable on my e-ink Kindle reader.

Well Written and Very Entertaining

"The Trouble With Trolls" is a wonderful children's book that combines a humorous story with an important moral. The dialogue is very well written and I liked the illustrations, although not everyone will like the realistic photos of the characters. I thought they worked very well, so one's reaction to them will be a matter of taste.

This was another story I could relate to. My four years old daughter forgot to say thank you when an adult gave her something. When the adult said, "What is the magic word when someone gives you something?", my daughter looked puzzled for a second and then her face lit up with an 'aha' look, and she proudly said "bibbity bobbity boo". This book does capture the humour in trying to teach manners, as the boy tries and tries to think about what he needs to do to get across the bridge.

This is a book that children will likely want to reread many times, either for themselves or with an adult reading to them. The troll is funny, the reader can act out the various voices, and there is a lot of opportunity for interaction between the reader and the younger child.

Paying the Troll's Toll

"The Trouble with Trolls" is an entertaining Aesop's fable-style story regarding the importance of using good manners, and explaining why rude behavior doesn't work. In addition to providing a positive method of teaching good values, it would make a great bed-time story for children.

Interspersed throughout the story, the reader will find five photographs (rather than illustrations). The three photos of landscape scenes work very well in the story. The two photos with characters from the story aren't quite as successful, however, because they are too realistic for a story from an enchanted land.

You can tell that this book was written by someone who has been there, done that and has LOTS of experience and knowledge as how to be successful! For example: The author suggests having co-hosts help with the sale and assigning jobs to each of them- This is a wonderful notion if you can get your friends and neighbors to do it. Perhaps when they read how much more effective the sale could be and that they could make more money by teaming up they'll jump on board!

I especially liked the 10 tips for effective organization and spacing of your garage sale and yard sale tables, display and traffic flow, but I believe my favorite tip is on what to do with the annoying "early bird" people (They are part of the reason I dread having a garage sale!- But not any more!) You'll also learn about how to make signs and where to put them, pricing your items, (great examples on $ amounts for them), what to do with unsold stuff, then concludes with even more useful tips.

Surprisingly helpful!

I didn't think a book about how to throw together a garage sale would be that helpful, but this book actually was! The author mentioned some tools and techniques that I've never considered before. It's cool that all of the steps are laid out in a straightforward, easy-to-follow manner--like a checklist. I have no doubt that after having read this book, my next garage sale will be much more successful than my last one. Awesome.

Grade 5-7-With a full cast and some background music, this radio play version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic hits the high points of the original novel. It is quite abbreviated, so each episode in Anne's orphan-girl-made-good story is afforded just enough time to lay out the bones of the plot. However, Anne's spunky and endearing character shines through scene after scene, as does some of the nostalgic charm of Avonlea's Canadian setting and quaint old Green Gables. All the parts are read very well, with a touching intensity that makes up for some of the brevity of plot episodes. A narrator fills in quite smoothly between the scenes for each event. Two nice features for young listeners make this a useful introduction to audio fiction. There is a pleasant chime played at the end of each side, and at the beginning of each side a line or two from the preceding side is repeated, helping to move listeners smoothly through the break in the action. This entertaining version may help lead youngsters to the original novel. School and public libraries seeking to add abridged novels to their collections or to introduce or entice young readers to longer fiction will want to consider this version.

Wonderful book but Kindle edition has flaws

The book was just as enjoyable as the first time I read it years ago. I laughed out loud a few times. My only issue was that the Kindle edition has sentences, and in some cases whole paragraphs, missing throughout the book. The first one I noticed was Anne's first prayer at Green Gables, but there were lots more. I thought it might be an issue with my Kindle Fire, so I opened the book on my husband's regular Kindle. Sure enough, the same sentences are missing. Disappointing. If you've never read the book before, I would recommend reading a hard copy and not the Kindle edition until (if) there is a better one.

SWIFT, SLICK, AND SWEET

Anne of Green Gables is a fantastic book that takes place in Prince Edward Island located in Canada. This book is about Anne's life as a girl at Green Gables. Anne is an 11-year-old chatty girl who loves to talk. When Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert plan to adopt a boy to help with farmwork they find a happy young girl thinking she is going to have a true home at last in their hands. After questioning Anne Marilla has second thoughts and decides(with the help of Matthew) to raise the girl herself. This book is book is Anne's life as a child. Through friendship and her mistakes Anne learns lessons and grows up to be a proper young lady. Even at the end of the book, Anne stays strong like a proud young lady with Marilla at her side. In this swift, slick, and sweet book Anne grows up and learns from all her accidents to stand by her friends and Marilla Cuthbert.

Anne makes friends and has many adventures in this book. I liked the part when Anne accidentally died her hair green. She meant to die it black.

A Canadian Classic

I first read this novel as a child, and have read it, and the rest of the collection over the years. I recommend it to young people, as a lovely story about a lonely child who blossoms under the care of an unlikely family, and small community. As an adult, it gave me a link to the Barnardo or Home Children, who were orphans sent to Canada for a better life. Anne differed only in that she was an orphan from the East Coast. I also learned about Lucy Maude Mongomery's Canada at that time - the social mores, and some prejudice towards French Canadians in that community. All of these references created a desire to learn more about the history and social concerns of that time. What a interesting journey -- start by reading Anne of Green Gables!

Además de que la edición nos brinda otros relatos, anteriores y posteriores en el tiempo, con los que se puede hacer un interesante análisis comparativo.

About the Author
Edward Espe Brown began cooking and practicing Zen in 1965. He was the first head resident cook at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center from 1967 to 1970. He later worked at the celebrated Greens Restaurant in San Francisco, serving as busboy, waiter, floor manager, wine buyer, cashier, host, and manager. Ordained a priest by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, he has taught meditation retreats and vegetarian cooking classes throughout North America and Europe. He is the author of several cookbooks and the editor of Not Always So, a book of lectures by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. He is the subject of the critically acclaimed 2007 film How to Cook Your Life.

the book is wonderful for those wanting to easy quick, healthy meals. It has a good mixture of recipes which range from very quick and easy to relatively complex. the book has two parts-
1) basics- how to cook, working with your ingredients, entering the kitchen( basics such as what knives, what equipments to use etc.) 2) recipes- divided into sections on breads, salads, soups and stocks, sauces spreads butters relishes, tofu entrees, entrees with a crust, breakfast and vege grain potato dishes.

the recipes are very 'zen', they use fresh healthy ingredients and they are pretty quick. Some recipes use approximate measures and often he mentions things like " use lentils" but dosen't specify which kind. So this ambivalence and be slightly confusing, but overall its great, very different and original.

Cook what you know

This is not a traditional cookbook. No pictures, lots of essays, some poetry, and basic recipes. What distinguishes it are Espe Brown's pontifications about cooking, zen, life. Like the movie, How To Cook Your Life, this book is an expression of Espe Brown's personality rather that his cooking expertise. The recipes are very basic - but I guess that's the point. He wants readers to cook by feel, by what they already know, rather than by measure and specific instructions. As I read many of the recipes, like the one for kidney bean chili, I thought, Wow, I already know how to do that.

I was also surprised that this wasn't a vegan or a health cookbook. Lots of the recipes call for eggs, milk, cheese, and oil. Not very au courant (the Engine 2 folks would have a fit), but I kind of like that about EB - he's got an acerbic (but loving) sense of humor - he can throw jabs at macrobiotics, and I'm sure at veganism. He's community-conscious and compassionate, but no food purist. Lots of vegan cookbooks seem rather self-righteous and humorless. EB's cookbook is imperfect, but meandering and fun.

"My Zen teacher, Suzuki Roshi, would buy the worst-looking vegetables. 'Who would use them if I don't'".

The cookbook is synthesized from several sources. Besides a thorough introduction to using a kitchen, the utensils, and a walkthrough many ingredients (cabbage, carrot, asf), the book contains over 300 recipes. Scattered through the pages are one or two page stories from EB's experience, "The Sincerity of Battered Teapots" for example. Insincerity can create a kind of paralysis, exhaustion from constantly hiding who one is.

There are vegan recipes. EB likes dairy, however.

It turns out EB also likes Rumi: "What was said to the rose that made it bloom is being spoken to my heart now."

EB also composed a prayer for waiters to be said silently (he is one): "Here is your food, my heartfelt offering for your well-being. May your heart beat peace, and may you grow in compassion."

Yes! I bought the book and it's a loved member of our household. I recommend it for a reference and for a beginning cook , since it has detailed guidance.
