Sheltered is a thrilling true life account of the Appalachian Trail. The two thousand mile trail spans from Springer Mountain, Georgia through fourteen states and ends on the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine. A couple thousand people go out each year in hopes of completing the entire trail in one go, but few do.
This story is filled with hiker lingo and weaves with the ins and outs of hiker culture. The stinky, bearded hikers, who hunger for burgers and thirst for beer, are the everyday comrades on the trail. In towns, hikers flock to the grocery stores where they are greeted with shocked townsfolk, who watch these mountain men with caution. At restaurants the waiters stare and their jaws drop to the floor as hikers gulp down burgers with a side of Mountain Dew.
Starting out in the spring means waking up to snow. By the time thru-hikers get to Virginia, winter is gone for good, and hikers have their trail legs. By Pennsylvania, hikers are zapped of energy from the heat and low water. They are attacked by mosquitoes in New Jersey. They get lost in the cliffs of New York. Vermont is beautiful, but is no rival against the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where hikers get to walk above treeline and experience heaven on clear days. At the border of Maine, it is so close and yet so far. Maine, wildest of all, is also the most brutal, and beautiful of all.
Some hike it in sections and others in thru-hikes. It’s been said, “For a section hiker, it’s a lifetime of hikes. For a thru-hiker, it's a hike of a lifetime.”

Drama, drama, drama drips from every page, as do constant errors
By Raymond Myers
This AT memoir is in the usual style of a daily log, but with constant shallow emotional drama created almost entirely in the mind and psyche of the author. Who do I like? Who likes me? Why is everyone mean to me? By the time the author wrote "The last thing I wanted to be was judgmental or hypocritical," I actually laughed out loud.
At another point, she described duct-taping a hair dryer to the wall of a motel room. This sort of conduct is why various services up and down the Appalachian Trail have begun refusing to take in AT hikers. At another point, the author wrote that she felt "much more deserving than tourists." This sort of disdain for others and the property of others is another reason some are not happy with AT thru-hikers in general. Only takes one bad apple displaying that bad attitude to ruin it for all the good, humble hikers.
When drama wasn't dripping from every page, errors were. Plainly, this composition was never seen by the eyes of an editor or fact-checker. I found as many as four errors in a four-line paragraph. Some were simple typos, but others were plainly homonyms or simply not knowing the meaning of words, or understanding basic punctuation.
There are many, many very fine books about the Appalachian Trail and personal accounts of the hardships and joys of doing thru-hikes. This is not the best of them.
Having given my honest critique, I will say that this hiker made it all the way (with one small skipped section she was able to rationalize about) and deserves much credit for that. This book would have been, and still could be, a very fine account of her accomplishment, if it was subjected to some serious editing for errors, content, and style.

Save your money. Worse hiking book I have ever read
By Doug
I do not usually review books that I have read simply because everyone has a different taste of what they like. However, I had to try and save a few of you some money. I have read most of the hiking books about the AT, PCT and the CDT, and this is by far the worse. The book rambles on and contains so little substance that you can not wait until it ends. There are many good hiking books such as AWOL on the Appalachian Trail, Skywaker, The Last Englishman, Stumbing Thru, and a Walk for Sunshine just to name a few. Pick any other hiking book and you most likly have made a better choise then this.

Poorly written, author unlikeable
By Sam
I wanted to be able to give this book more than one star, but it was difficult to read. I felt like I was slogging through and it was difficult to finish (not generally the case with the AT books I read).
The author is very young on her journey, and therefore, selfish and immature. I found her constant "begging" to be annoying and I'm sure her fellow hikers were bothered by it as well. She didn't seem to appreciate the blessings she received as much as she should and seemed to constantly want people to do more-to go one step beyond what they had already done.
This book is disjointed. For large parts I was left wondering where the author was, and her italics of the hiker names was distracting and irritating. I can understand using italics the first time she met a new hiker, but not throughout the book.
Truly, the feel is of a diary mashed together and thrown into a book without much thought (there are several spelling errors and other mistakes).
She tried to throw in some description here and there, but didn't really draw me in as some other authors have done. To her credit, I am very picky about description and want to know as much as I can. Especially about food. Who doesn't like menus that describe a dish with such words as "crispy, sizzling, bubbling," and so on?
I also didn't get a feel of the AT being difficult for her at all. There wasn't much description of aches and pains and physical and emotional suffering.
The end didn't impress me either. I didn't sense that the author really learned anything from her journey (not the least of which was the lesson of being independent and not counting on others to do things for her/give things to her).
I've bought many books on the AT and this is my least favorite. I didn't enjoy it much at all.
